Section 31 of Public Chapter XXV of 1873 (Tennessee's 38th General Assembly):

Be it further enacted, In every Public School shall be taught Orthography, Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, Grammar, Geography, Elementary Geology of Tennessee, and History of the United States; and Vocal Music may be taught therein....

So... Anybody know (without looking it up) what Orthography is?

Well.. an orthographic air photo is one that has been corrected for the distortions in scale caused by the topography of the landscape. Basically making it so that every point in the picture look as though youre looking straight down at it and not just straight down at the center of the image. So I would have to go with it being related to that.

I believe the stipulation was without looking it up.

What are resources if you can't use them? "Not looking it up" questions never made much sense to me. One should be able to research a given subject to learn more about it.

Damn it Jim I'm a doctor not an orthographer. Seriously though I have no idea what it is. Quite strange they would make everybody know about something no one knows anything about.
