effect, as a noun: meaning; intent; result. Usage: His effect was perfectly clear.

effect, as a verb: to cause to happen. Usage: The moon effects the tides.

affect, as a noun: emotion. Usage: He had a blank affect.

affect, as a verb: to be fond of; to simulate. Usage: He affected the 1940s style of dressage.

affect, as a verb: to produce an effect on; influence. Usage: That wouldn't affect me.

We'll take up the use of semicolons next.
